Ria Formosa Birdwatching Tour
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the pier of Faro, specifically at the Passeio Abu Sào Ibn Harune. Here, we'll board a pontoon boat and sail towards the Ria Formosa, a natural paradise located in the Algarve.
During the cruise, we'll discover why the Ria Formosa is considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal. Take out your binoculars and get ready to observe countless birds!
You'll see a multitude of aquatic birds such as white storks, little egrets and spoonbills. During the winter, we can see more wading birds, however, other smaller birds such as curlews, plovers and stonechats remain in the estuary year-round.
The tour will continue next to several oyster and clam farms, where we'll learn about the importance of shellfish fishing in this area of southern Portugal. We'll also see some birds that feed on shellfish, such as oystercatchers and black-tailed godwits.
As we sail to the mouth of the estuary, we'll stop to enjoy the views of this natural oasis and continue checking out its birdlife. This estuary is a breeding place for some species like little terns and plovers, and in winter, even flamingos!
After a two-hour boat ride with birdwatching on the Ria Formosa, we'll sail until we reach the pier in Faro, where the experience will end.
Birdwatching
The Ria Formosa is one of the best places in Portugal for birdwatching. However, animals are unpredictable, and the sighting of a greater or lesser number of birds will depend on various factors such as the weather and breeding seasons.
