On this hiking route to Serracozzo Cave, we'll explore the interior of Mount Etna by walking through its narrow volcanic tunnel - a unique experience on Europe's largest active volcano!
Description
At the indicated time we'll meet at the car park of the Citelli Refuge and start a trekking route to the most important cave of Etna, Serracozzo Cave. Let's explore the interior of one of the most famous volcanoes in the world!
We'll start walking up Etna from 1740 metres (5708 feet) until we reach 2160 metres (7086 feet) above sea level, where we'll find the entrance to Serracozzo Cave. All along the way, we'll cross the birch forests, characteristic of the area, and see the remains of volcanic rock.
When we reach the edge of the Bove Valley, we'll find the Serra delle Concazze, a large 8-kilometre-long (4.9-mile) depression on the eastern side of Etna. There we'll make a stop to rest and recover your strength with the food you have brought with you.
Afterwards, we'll enter Serracozzo Cave through its volcanic tunnel. Are you ready to see one of the most spectacular places in the Etna National Park? Originating in 1971, this elongated lava canyon has a sheet of light that enters through a small hole in the ceiling. You'll be mesmerised by the sparkles!
After seeing the inside of the cave, we'll go outside and return to the meeting point after 4 hours of hiking.
