On this hike in the Calcarazzi Mountains, we'll see the volcanic landscapes of Mount Etna and the Sicilian coast on this fantastic adventure. You can't miss it!
Hike Details
At the designated time, we'll meet at the Schiena dell'Asino parking to begin this hiking experience through the Calcarazzi Mountains, one of the most beautiful natural landscapes of Mount Etna.
During the 7.5-kilometre (4.6-mile) trek, we'll circle the Bove Valley and reach the craters in the Calcarazzi Mountains. Did you know that these cones were formed after the volcanic eruption in December 1991? It was one of the most powerful in 20th-century Sicily.
We'll begin walking under the shade of pine trees and, once we've past some curves in the road, a spectacular view of Sicily's southeastern coastline will open up in front of us. Photo time!
We'll reach the peak of the Schiena dell'Asino route, from where we'll be able to admire the Bove Valley beneath us. This extensive 8-kilometre (5-mile) geological depression is made up of volcanic sand that gives this area an almost moon-like quality. You'll feel like you're in another world!
After admiring these views, with Mount Etna's craters in front of us, we'll reach an altitude of 2245 metres (7365 feet). From here, we'll head inland, leaving behind Bove Valley and turning towards the Calcarazzi Mountains.
This way we'll reach the Silvestre Superiore crater, from where we'll observe another incredible scenic view. From here, we'll descend down to the Sapienza refuge and make our way back to the initial meeting point, which we'll reach after a total of 4-5 hours.
