If you're in El Fuerte, don't miss this visit to a community of Mayo Indigenous Peoples, also known as the Yoreme. We'll learn about the culture and traditions of this indigenous group from the states of Sonora and Sinaloa.
Mayo Indigenous Community Tour
At the indicated time, we'll pick you up at your hotel in El Fuerte and head to a community of Mayo Indigenous Peoples to learn about this ancestral culture that calls the area between the south of Sonora and the north of Sinaloa home.
Upon arrival, we'll speak with residents of the community, who refer to each other as Yoreme, meaning "people who respect tradition". Did you know that the first traces of settlement in the Yoreme region date all the way back to 180 BC?
Next, some members of the community will show us how the typical tortillas and antojitos are prepared. These corn-based foods are usually accompanied by a chili sauce and are eaten as an appetizer. Would you like to try them?
During our visit to this indigenous community, we'll also experience popular ancestral dances. Ever heard of the dance of the deer? We'll get to see how the Mayo/Yoreme use movement to describe the life and death of their culture's most sacred animal - a captivating experience!
After two hours, we'll finish the activity by saying goodbye at the meeting point in El Fuerte.
