Discover the amazing Lago del Desierto at your own pace when you take this fantastic trip from El Chaltén. Besides seeing the vast lake and the beautiful forests and mountains that surround it, you'll also have the opportunity to take a hike across the Huemul Glacier.
Lago del Desierto Trip
We'll pick you up from your hotel at 10 am before heading towards the stunning Lago del Desierto. During the road trip, of just over one hour, we'll make some stops to admire the spectacular landscapes of Patagonia.
Once we arrive at the Lago del Desierto, you'll have approximately five hours of free time to explore the area in the way that you want. You can choose to navigate the lake onboard one of the tourist boats that cruise along the waters or enjoy a spectacular hike up to the top of the Huemul Glacier.
If you decide to stay at the shores of the lake, you'll enjoy a perfect panoramic view of Mount Fitz Roy, rising up a staggering 11,000 feet. As you stroll around the Lago del Desierto you'll be astonished by the abundant vegetation of the Patagonian forests. These forest areas are characterized by elegant white oaks and Antarctic beeches which are native to this part of the world.
After around five hours of enjoying the majestic landscapes of this amazing natural wilderness, we'll take you back to your hotel, arriving around 5:30 pm.
Optional activities
Boat ride
If you want to go on a 45-minute boat trip around the Lago del Desierto, you must purchase your ticket in cash on the day of the activity when you arrive at the lake. The price of the ticket is 16,000 ARS (US$ 16).
Boat departure times: in the months of January and February, the boat departs at 12 pm and 2 pm; in the month of March and from November to December, the boat ride departs at 12 pm.
Hike
If you want to hike along the Huemul Glacier, you must pay the hiking route access fee in cash. The price is 600 ARS (US$ 0.60). The 2-kilometer (1.2-mile) route takes an hour and a half (round trip).
