Royal Mile Closes Tour
Activity Details
Edinburgh's alleyways, or closes, bear witness to the fascinating history of the Scottish capital. To discover their secrets, we'll meet at 1 Upper Bow, just off the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, and begin our tour of the Royal Mile's closes!
We'll travel through the city's past as we descend the Royal Mile. It will feel like stepping back in time! The closes are characterised by narrow, ancient passages where some of the most important chapters in Edinburgh's history have been played out. To uncover their tales, we'll enter some of the most famous, such as Bake House Close, Dunbar's Close and James Court.
During the tour, we'll learn the stories behind prominent figures such as David Hume, one of the most important philosophers of the time; Allan Ramsay, a poet fundamental to understanding Scottish literature; or Adam Smith, the father of modern economics.
As we stroll along the Royal Mile, we'll also get to know the merchants who contributed to the development of Edinburgh or the legends that surround these alleys. You'll surely see these nooks and crannies from a different perspective now!
In the final stretch of the tour, we'll enter the hidden gardens of the city, where we'll find architectural gems that will leave you fascinated. Finally, we'll admire Holyroodhoyse Palace and the National Parliament of Scotland, as well as the emblematic Arthur's Seat, at the end of the Royal Mile.
After 2.5 hours in total, we'll say our goodbyes and bring the tour to an end.
