Tour Details
Did you know that Écija once had 14 churches and 18 convents? At the designated time, we'll meet at the Plaza de Santiago to begin this tour where we'll discover the religious beauty of this town in the province of Sevilla.
First, we'll admire the Church of Santiago, the only church in Écija that flawlessly preserves the Gothic-Mudéjar style. After seeing its imposing facade, we'll discover its altarpiece inside, one of the most important in the Archdiocese of Seville after the Seville Cathedral.
Continuing our tour, we'll head to Plaza de España, where the remains of a primitive episcopal building were found. You'll also see the exterior of the Church of Santa Barbara, which was built over a Roman temple.
Our next stop will be at the beautiful Church of Santa Maria. The moment you gaze up at its bell tower, you'll likely be reminded of the iconic Giralda in Seville. Here, we'll dive into the rich history of this important church in Écija and take a closer look at the archeological pieces housed in its courtyard.
Next, we'll stroll over to the Church of Los Descalzos (the Church of the Barefoot), considered a Baroque gem both within the Astigitan and Andalusian styles. Despite its understated exterior, you'll be captivated by its stunning interior.
To complete the tour, we'll pass by the Convent of Las Marroquíes before reaching the Santa Cruz Parish Church. Lastly, we'll admire the exterior of the Church of San Pablo and Church of Santo Domingo to then return to our starting point.
After 2.5-hour, we'll conclude our guided tour of Écija's churches.
