Set off on a day trip from Durango to explore the La Plata Mountains and Canyon in an off-roading Jeep! Choose between two different tour options where you can immerse yourself in the rugged natural landscape that characterizes this region of the United States. Both tours start and finish at 360 S Camino Del Rio in Durango, and include a local guide, ready to take you on a Rocky Mountain adventure! Below, you can find a brief description of each tour option:
Scenic Waterfall Tour (2.5 hours)
Meet us at the indicated time in Durango, for an unforgettable tour of La Plata Canyon's scenic waterfalls. After a 20-minute drive in our open-air jeep, we'll arrive at the mouth of the canyon, where the fun begins. Hold on tight, it's going to be a bumpy ride as we drive up the mountain to discover 3 majestic falls!
Slowly but surely, we'll navigate the winding trails and climb deeper into the canyon. As each waterfall comes into sight, we'll climb out of the jeep to take photos and soak up the tranquil atmosphere. Don’t forget your camera!
Our grand finale is sure to leave you captivated as we visit an exclusive and hidden waterfall, perched 3,048 meters (10,000 ft) above sea level! We'll marvel at the 8-meter (25 ft) cascade, and explore remnants of historic mining structures, while taking in views you won’t find anywhere else.
Then, after an exciting 2.5 hours, we'll return to our starting point in Durango, bringing the experience to an end.
La Plata Mountains Tour (4 hours)
On this tour, we'll experience La Plata Canyon, also known as Kennebec Pass!
First up, we'll climb into our open-air jeep for a short 20-minute drive to our destination. As we reach the canyon base and begin our drive upwards, we'll keep our eyes peeled for local wildlife often spotted in the area. We might be able to spot animals like deer, bears, marmots, elk, and many bird species that call this area home.
We'll drive up 3,658 m (12,000 ft) above sea level to take in stunning landscapes and admire the canyon's geology, carved out by ancient glaciers millions of years ago. Have your camera ready, these views are one of a kind!
During the trip, we'll hear fascinating stories about the canyon's history. Did you know this area is home to ghost towns and abandoned mines from decades past?
Then, after 4 hours exploring the area, we'll return to the starting point, bringing the experience to an end.
