Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu: Five Days
Machu Picchu Multi-Day Hiking Tour
Day 1: Cusco - Soraypampa
Embark on a thrilling adventure as we pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at the designated time. A scenic 2-hour drive will lead us to the charming village of Mollepata. Upon arrival, you'll have the option to buy some breakfast, gearing up for the day.
After this energizing stop, we'll continue for an additional hour until we reach Soraypampa. Here, muleteers and horses await to assist in transporting our belongings for the hike. Beginning with a 2-hour trek, we'll arrive at the captivating Humantay Lagoon. Enjoy approximately 2 hours of free time to explore this breathtaking spot, getting tons of spectacular photos.
Following our exploration, we'll return to the Soraypampa area, where our overnight camp is situated. We'll have a delicious lunch featuring a typical Peruvian dish, and the remainder of the day is yours to explore. We recommend a visit to the Salkantay viewpoint, offering one of the most panoramic views in the region.
As the sun sets, we'll gather for dinner and a well-deserved rest.
Day 2: Soraypampa - Chaullay
Recharged after breakfast, we'll bid farewell to the Soraypampa camp and set off for our next hike. We'll ascend to an altitude of 4650 meters (15,255 feet), reaching the Salkantay pass. From this place, the second-highest point in the Cusco region, we'll marvel at spectacular views of peaks, including the imposing snow-capped summits of Humantay, Tucarhuay, and Pumasillo.
After a 2-hour descent, we'll take a brief lunch break to replenish energy. The trek concludes in Chaullay, our camp at the entrance to the Peruvian Amazon.
We'll wrap up the day with dinner at the camp, anticipating the adventures that await tomorrow!
Day 3: Chaullay - Santa Teresa
The third day will begin with breakfast at the camp before embarking on a journey to Sahuayaco Beach. During this approximately 5-hour hike, we'll revel in the sights of waterfalls, wild orchids, and plantations of coffee, bananas, and avocados.
Upon arrival, we'll board local public transportation bound for the third camp in the Santa Teresa district. Enjoy the remainder of the day at your leisure after lunch, exploring the tropical valley. A refreshing dip in the Cocalmayo Hot Springs of Santa Teresa is highly recommended.
As night falls, we'll reconvene at the camp for dinner and a well-deserved rest.
Day 4: Santa Teresa - Aguas Calientes
Following breakfast at the campsite, it'll be time to embark on a three-hour hike through the Santa Teresa Valley to the Llactapata ruins, situated directly across from Machu Picchu. We'll explore the Inca archaeological site, delving into its legendary history.
The route descends for an additional 2 hours to the Hidroeléctrica train station, where lunch awaits. We'll then continue walking along the train tracks until reaching the hotel in Aguas Calientes, our accommodation for the night.
In the evening, you'll savor dinner at a typical local restaurant before returning to the hotel. Until tomorrow!
Day 5: Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco
On the final day of the tour, you'll enjoy breakfast packed for the hike to Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World.
Once there, we'll embark on a 2.5-hour guided tour, unraveling the secrets of this ancient Inca citadel, now one of Peru's most cherished treasures.
Post-tour, return to your hotel in Cusco, with an expected arrival around 10 pm.
