Cajas National Park Tour

  • 47 reviews | 288 travellers
I had a fantastic experience at Cajas National Park with our guide Moisés. His knowledge of the place was impressive; he provided interesting facts about the flora, fauna and history of the park, all with a great sense of humor that made the tour very enjoyable and entertaining. In addition, the landscape is really beautiful, full of spectacular views and unique corners. I recommend this tour without a doubt, and Moisés was the perfect complement to enjoy it to the fullest.

Cajas National Park Tour

At 8:30 am, we'll see you in Parque Calderón to board our bus. We'll leave Cuenca behind as we set off on our journey to the Cajas National Park, located just 50 minutes away.

First of all, we'll arrive at the Llaviucu Lagoon which, despite being almost 10,000 feet (3,000 metres) above sea level, is the lowest area of the Cajas National Park. From here, we'll start a 1-hour 30-minute hiking route to admire the fascinating local flora and fauna.

After our hike, we'll get back into our vehicle and make a stop at the Loma de las Tres Cruces, or the "Three Crosses Hill"... do you know how it got this name? The area, located at more than 13,000 feet (4,000 metres) above sea level, marks the continental divide between the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans. From its lofty vantage point, you'll enjoy spectacular views over the glacier lakes dotted throughout the park - it's home to more than 200 of them!

Continuing onwards, you'll make a brief stop to see Toreadore Lake before visiting the Polilepys Forest. This forest is full of thousand-year-old trees and is one of the most biologically diverse páramo areas.

All this walking is sure to have worked up an appetite! We'll get our energy back with a delicious lunch at a local restaurant. Our lunch menu will include potato soup and a second course, which could be trout or roast chicken.

We'll then set off on our return journey and arrive back at Parque Calderón in Cuenca, where we'll say our goodbyes at 3 pm.
