History of Wine in the Canary Islands

In the 14th century, the Canary Islands welcomed the introduction of European vines, courtesy of missionaries predating Spanish colonization. By the mid-16th century, winemaking burgeoned into a pivotal industry, with British merchants facilitating the export of the renowned sweet Malvasia wine to both Europe and America. Despite enduring challenges such as wars and volcanic disruptions, the Canary Islands sustained their wine trade for an impressive 300-year span.

The narrative took a notable turn in the 1860s with the emergence of the phylloxera vine aphid, which wreaked havoc on European vineyards. A remarkable exception, the Canary Islands remained untouched, safeguarding some of the planet's oldest grapevine varieties.

In the contemporary landscape, particularly in Tenerife, the Islands have garnered acclaim for producing exceptional wines. The absence of grafting, complemented by volcanic soil and diverse microclimates, lends a distinctive quality to wines ranging from crisp whites to robust reds. Across the varied topography of Tenerife, encompassing coastal regions to mountain slopes boasting some of Europe's highest vineyards, the Islands' winemaking legacy persists.
