The Little Mermaid & Port of Copenhagen Free Tour
Description
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the Generator Copenhagen Hostel to begin this free tour of Copenhagen. Do you want to see the Little Mermaid? Let's go!
During this tour, we'll walk around the Port of Copenhagen and discover the history of this important place which has been a place of economic and cultural exchange for centuries. We'll see the monuments that are located in this area and learn about their origins.
On the way to the coastal area, we'll pass through the King's Gardens and see the exterior of Rosenborg Castle until we reach Nyboder. This district noted for its striking orange buildings, was built in the 17th century to house the Danish Navy. We'll tell you about the connection between the growth of the merchant port and the increase in the number of navy personnel.
We'll then arrive at Kastellet, one of the oldest forts in Northern Europe. We'll walk through this citadel and, upon leaving, we'll have reached the sculpture of the Little Mermaid. The monument, which pays homage to one of Hans Christian Andersen's most popular fairy tales, has become an icon of the city. Don't forget your camera!
The area where the statue is located also offers a privileged view of the Port of Copenhagen. Did you know that it's the largest harbour in Denmark and one of the most important in the Baltic Sea? We'll tell you some curious facts to prove it.
Walking along the harbour, we'll also see the Copenhagen Opera House, the Nyholm Central Guardhouse and the lively Ofelia Plads. Finally, after 2.5 hours of sightseeing, we'll conclude the free tour by arriving at the Nyhavn Canal in the heart of Copenhagen.
