Meet your guide at Hojbro Plads, next to the equestrian statue of Absalon, the 12th-century warrior-bishop who founded Copenhagen. After a brief historical introduction, you'll make your way east toward the Island of Christianshavn.
Christianshavn is considered the 'alternative' district of Copenhagen. The origins of this renowned neighbourhood date back to the 17th century, when it was created as an extension of the city's fortifications by the ruler at the time, Christian IV, for whom the district was named. Explore the area's pretty cobblestone streets on this free walking tour of Christianshavn while you learn more about its past from your expert guide.
Next to the Christianshavn Canal, which cuts through the district, you'll reach the iconic Church of Our Saviour. This striking Baroque building is characterised by its black-and-gold corkscrew spire, which has an external winding staircase that visitors can climb up for panoramic views of Copenhagen from above.

From here, we'll take you to the main entrance of the Free State Christiania. While this intriguing community is technically part of Copenhagen's Christianshavn neighbourhood, it has been seen as a "state within another state" since its formation in the 1960s. The 1000-odd inhabitants have their own regulations and consider themselves outside of Danish and EU law. You'll hear all about the hippy origins of this small commune and learn about the controversies surrounding it. Please note that we won't enter Christiania as part of the tour.
Finally, we'll finish the tour of Christianshavn near Christiania which you can visit on your own if you wish to.
