Barrio Sur Guided Tour
Tour Details
We'll meet at the indicated time in front of the Basílica del Santísimo Sacramento, in the heart of the Barrio Sur. There, we'll go back to the year 1680, when this temple was built and the city of Colonia del Sacramento was founded. Let this journey back in time begin!
To kick off the tour, we'll speak about the numerous conflicts and reconstructions that this building has undergone. We'll then walk in search of the ruins of the Casa de los Gobernadores, vestiges that bear witness to the struggles between the Portuguese and the Spanish for control of the city. We'll talk about the time when the building housed the Lusitanian authorities and later the representatives of the Spanish Crown.
We'll continue to the city wall and Portón de Campo, one of the most iconic postcards of Cologne. We'll learn about the importance of this defensive structure, as we imagine what life was like in this fortress.
Afterwards, we'll walk to the Bastión de San Miguel. When was it built? How many battles took place on this site? We'll answer all these questions while admiring its great walls.
Along the tour, we'll also discover how Colonia del Sacramento was a strategic point for disputes and battles between empires. Proof of this is its historical heritage in the heart of the Barrio Sur, which reflects the fusion of Portuguese and Spanish architectural styles.
After a 1-hour tour, we'll end this journey into the past at the initial meeting point.
