Pilgrims who came to this corner of Burgundy were immediately captivated by the sight of the magnificent Cluny Abbey. Even non-believers came to the basilica just to admire its huge structure. During the Middle Ages, this Benedictine monastery held the privilege of being the largest Christian church in the world, until St. Peter's Basilica was built in Rome.
The history of Art in Europe cannot be understood without knowing Cluny Abbey, whose Romanesque architecture would serve as inspiration and model for the other shrines built in the Old Continent. This ticket will allow you to visit the remains of the old abbey, whose origins date back to the year 909.
Visiting the famous cloister of Cluny and the rest of the abbey buildings, you'l learn how the monks of the Benedictine order practiced their faith, and how their lifestyle also served as inspiration and example for other religious orders that expanded throughout Europe during the Middle Ages.
Inside this European Heritage site, you'll also encounter what was once one of the elegant campuses of the renowned Arts et Métiers ParisTech University.
Opening Hours
Cluny Abbey is open from Monday to Sunday at the following times:
- April 1 - June 30: from 9:30 am to 6 pm
- July 1 - August 31: from 9:30 am to 7 pm
- September 1 - 30: from 9:30 am - 6 pm
- October 1 - March 31: from 9:30 am - 5 pm
The Museum of Art and Archaeology will be closed between 12:30 pm and 2 pm until the end of the year.
On December 24 and December 31, the abbey will close at 4:00 pm.
Please note that all of these times are flexible and subject to change.
The last allowed access to the abbey is 45 minutes before closing time, while the last access to the museum is 30 minutes before closing time.
Free Admission
Admission to the Cluny Abbey is free for the following individuals:
- Young people from the European Union between 18 and 25 years old.
- Children under 18 years old, regardless of their nationality.
Admission is also free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month between January 1 and March 31, and between November 1 and December 31. Similarly, the 3rd weekend of September is free.
In order to acquire the free admission mentioned above, you'll have to go to the site’s ticket office and present a certifying document of your eligibility for a free ticket.
