Maramures 2 Day Tour
Day 1: Cluj - Călinești - Breb
We'll pick you up from your hotel in Cluj at 9 am and set off to the north in the direction of Maramureș County, ready for our two-day tour of one of the most rural areas of Romania and its legendary history and culture.
After a three-hour drive, we'll reach the first stop on our tour: Călinești. In this picturesque village, we'll visit the Călinești Susani Church, one of the many historic wooden churches that characterise the Maramureș region of Romania. Inside, we'll admire the original frescoes that date back to the 18th century.
We'll then head to Breb, a town where you'll be enchanted by the medieval architecture and craftmanship still practiced to this day. We'll enjoy a delicious meal of traditional Romanian cuisine here, before spending the night in a guesthouse.
Day 2: Săpânța - Bârsana - Cluj
Leaving Breb behind, we'll kick off the second day of our tour visiting the curiously-named Merry Cemetery in Săpânța. The cemetery is known for its colourful and beautifully decorated headstones and hand-carved crosses, a tradition that began in 1935.
Afterwards, we'll visit two of the most famous wooden churches in Maramureș: Bârsana and Poienile Izei, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It'll then be time for lunch, and you'll get to try palinka, a typical local liqueur.
The final stop of our tour will be in Vâltori, where we'll have the opportunity to see the traditional natural washing machines used here. We'll then make the journey back to Cluj, where you'll be dropped off at your hotel for around 6 pm after two unforgettable days exploring Romania's Maramureș region.
