The best way to visit Transnistria is through an organized tour, as it allows you to make stops at key points and avoids communication barriers, which can be complex in this region. There are no perceived safety issues on the tour, and the price is optimal compared to other options. Exploring this region is really worthwhile: it is a true "Back to the USSR," an experience that is difficult to find in today's world. As a suggestion for improvement, perhaps a longer tour could be made.

On this day trip in Transnistria, we'll visit two fascinating cities in the breakaway region of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic: Tiraspol and Bender.

Day Trip Details

At the indicated time, we'll pick you up from your Chisinau hotel and head northeast, crossing the Dniester River towards the border between Moldova and Ukraine.

During this tour, we'll explore the most prominent cities in Transnistria (The Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic). Transnistria declared its independence from Moldova in 1990, sparking a hard-fought, two-year war. The Moldovan government and the European community have never recognized Transnistria's independence - in fact, only three other small separatist states in Eastern Europe have supported the secession. Nevertheless, Transnistria operates with its own government, police force, constitution, and even its own currency, the Transnistrian ruble.

After passing through passport control, we'll drive to the town of Bender, also known as Tighina. Here, we'll visit the Memorial to Military Glory, the Tighina Fortress, where King Charles XII of Sweden sought refuge after a defeat in 1709, and the train station.

Next, we'll explore Tiraspol, the capital of the separatist state of Transnistria. We'll embark on a panoramic tour of the city, starting with October 25th Avenue and making stops to explore iconic landmarks such as the Stalin Empire building, former USSR factories, Suvorov Square, and the University on foot.

After our visit, we'll leave you free time for lunch, and then we'll meet again to cross the border to Moldova (a frontier that's only operational for Transnistrian travellers) and return to Chisinau.

Arrival at your hotel is scheduled 6 hours after pickup.
