Patagoina Hike to the Cueva de las Manos
Patagoina Hike to the Cueva de las Manos
We'll pick you up from your hotel in Chile Chico at 7:30 am and board a minibus or 4x4 to the trailhead in Patagonia National Park. There we'll begin the trekking route through this breathtaking natural enclave.
During the 7-kilometer (4.4-mile), medium-difficulty route, we'll cross the arid landscapes of the Patagonian plains. As we move away from the shore of Lake General Carrera, we'll marvel at how the landscape gradually changes.
We'll make several stops along the route to better appreciate the geological jewels that can be found across this area of the Chilean Patagonia. Among its main natural wonders is the striking Piedra Clavada: a needle-shaped rock 40 meters (130 feet) high that has been formed by wind erosion.
The trail will then take us to the famous Cueva de las Manos (Cave of the Hands), a cave where we'll be able to observe several paintings over 10,000 years old. As we'll see, the ancient inhabitants of this prehistoric cave painted different petroglyphic forms of the animals they hunted, as well as outlines of their hands.
The final highlight of the hike will be in a spectacular location called Lunar Valley, which certainly lives up to its name - its landscapes are certainly moon-like. While contemplating the unique scenery, we'll have a light snack.
Finally, we'll return to the beginning of the trail and from there head back to your hotel in Chile Chico, where we'll arrive at 1:30 pm.
