On this free tour of Catania, we'll discover the history of a city that had to rise from the ashes more than seven times like a phoenix.
Description
At the appointed time, we'll meet in the Piazza Università, where we'll start this free tour of Catania, a city devastated by volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and war. Are you ready to discover the most fascinating chapters of its history?
We'll start the guided tour talking about the origins of this Sicilian town while admiring the Roman amphitheatre, a 2nd-century construction built with basaltic stone from the Etna volcano. While viewing this architectural jewel, we'll learn how the Greek town of Katane was founded and follow the timeline to the fall of the Roman Empire.
During the tour, we'll also unravel the life of the composer Vincenzo Bellini, nicknamed The Swan of Catania, and learn about the legend of Saint Agatha, the patron saint of the city.
Of course, we'll enter the emblematic via Crociferi, a street full of 18th-century buildings and monumental churches, such as San Giuliano and San Camillo. We'll also talk about the characteristics of Sicilian Baroque. Did you know that Catania is a World Heritage Site and one of the late baroque cities of Val di Noto?
After 2 hours of touring, we'll finish the free tour of Catania at the meeting point.
