Idanha-a-Velha, Monsanto & Penha Garcia Excursion
Idanha-a-Velha, Monsanto & Penha Garcia Excursion
At the appointed time we'll meet at the Nuno Álvares shopping centre in Castelo Branco and take a minibus to the historic village of Idanha-a-Velha, about an hour away.
Once we arrive, we'll go on a walk through the town, admiring its main points of interest like its Roman bridge, its old mill, and the gates of the city walls. We'll also see the ruins of the cathedral and discover the links between this town and the Knights Templar.
The next stop on the excursion will be in Monsanto, dubbed the most Portuguese village in Portugal. Why, you ask? We'll explain the reason for this nickname while we explore its historic center.
Monsanto is known for its striking huge granite stones and the houses that have been integrated into this peculiar landscape. We'll admire the exterior of its Clock Tower, a 15th-century bell tower, the façade of the main church, the castle, and other iconic monuments. You won't be able to stop taking pictures!
Along the route, we'll discover the charms of the Largo do Baluarte, the beauty of the church and chapels, the grandeur of the Lucano Tower and the grandeur of the castle. When we reach the top of Monsanto Castle, we'll enjoy one of the most incredible panoramic views of the place.
After taking in the amazing views, we'll make a quick stop in which you'll have time to get lunch at a local restaurant or have a picnic around the area.
Following the visit to Monsanto, we'll head to the town of Penha Garcia. There, we'll go on a 1.5-km (1-mile) walk around the town to discover its charms and connect with nature. We'll walk along the river beach, see one of its waterfalls and talk about the fossils that rest in these lands.
After a total of 8 hours, we'll finish the excursion arriving back at the starting point in Castelo Branco.
