San Basilio de Palenque Day Trip
San Basilio de Palenque Day Trip
After picking you up at around 9 am from your hotel in Cartagena de Indias, we'll set off for San Basilio de Palenque. After an hour's journey, we'll arrive at this incredible village with more than 300 years of history.
Did you know that San Basilio de Palenque was the first free African town in the Americas? Today it's considered a cultural heritage site where the creole language and African culture are still preserved. We'll explore its streets and find out all about the town's origins.
During the tour we'll marvel at the colourful houses, and the unique traditions that stem from the city's history; in the fields of music, dance and medicine. And without doubt the star attraction is the sight of the “Palenqueras” themselves: the colourfully dressed women who sell tropical fruits in the streets of the city, becoming in the process authentic icons of San Basilio de Palenque!
Having seen so much, we're sure you'll have worked up a hunger! It's a good job then that the tour includes delicious typical lunch, made up of delicacies from the area. Then, with the tour over, we'll head back to Cartagena arriving at around 3 pm.
Hotel pick up
This tour includes pick up from hotels in the Bocagrande area and the historical centre of Cartagena. If you aren't staying in any of these areas, you'll have to make your own way to the meeting point at the entrance to the Éxito San Diego supermarket.
