On this walking tour of Cartagena de Indias, we'll discover the pirate past of the city and also join a guided tour of the Carribean Naval Museum

Description

This activity is divided into 2 parts: an hour-long walking tour of Cartagena, followed by a 1.5-hour guided visit to the Caribbean Naval Museum. We'll begin the Pirates of Cartagena tour by meeting at Boca del Puente Clock Tower.

After a brief introduction, we'll make our way to the Museum of Gold, where we'll take a quick guided tour to see the most famous pirate treasures from Caribbean Colombia. We'll also see many different pre-Colombian artefacts that were commonly used by pirates in their daily lives.

Our next stop will be the Governor's Palace, one of the pirate's most coveted locations. Do you know why? After exploring the palace, we'll learn about the first attacks that occurred in Cartagena and discover the origin of the word pirate. You'll be stunned!

We'll continue this tour of Cartagena by visiting the House Museum of Sir Francis Drake, where we'll delve into the history of this English privateer and discover how he prepared to attack the city. Afterwards, we'll head to Plaza de la Aduana Square. Here, we'll hear of the old Casa de las Islas (House of the Islands), where famous pirates, privateers, and soldiers once stayed.

Very close to the square is the San Ignacio Bastion, where we'll see a scale replica of a real pirate ship. From the ship, we'll make our way to the Caribbean Naval Museum. In its permanent exhibition, we'll see a replica of the famous San José Galleon, discover many interesting facts about the history of pirates in Cartagena, and learn about the history of the ARC Gloria, the Colombian Navy Training Ship.

Finally, after a total of 2.5 hours, we'll finish this activity at the Naval Museum, where, once the guided tour has ended, you'll be able to stick around if you'd like to visit some of the other exhibitions there.
