Cárdenas Historical Walking Tour
Tour Details
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the flagpole in Cárdenas to embark on a walking tour through the streets and landmarks that bear witness to the pivotal events of Cuba's slavery era.
Our journey begins with an introduction to the legacy of African culture and its enduring connection to the history of slavery. We'll follow the same route that enslaved people were forced to take from their arrival at the port to the market where they were sold. How were human lives valued and commodified? Who profited from this exploitation? We'll discuss these critical questions and delve into the realities of this period.
Next, we'll visit a ceremonial ceiba tree, where we’ll observe an authentic Afro-Cuban tribute. Here, we’ll also see original shackles used on African captives, offering a sobering reflection on the violence and oppression they endured.
Our journey continues at Gaston's social project, where we’ll introduce you to a prominent practitioner of the Afro-Cuban Yoruba religion. We’ll explore the profound ties between this African faith, Cuban culture, and the legacy of slavery. We'll also gain insight into how these spiritual beliefs provided enslaved people with the strength and resilience to endure unimaginable hardships.
At this point in the tour, we'll set out to enjoy an authentic Afro-Cuban lunch featuring traditional dishes like ajicaco, okra, and fufu. This meal reflects the culinary heritage of enslaved people, prepared with simple, natural ingredients that have stood the test of time.
After 4 hours of exploration, reflection, and discovery, we'll bring the experience to an end.
Pickup in Varadero
If you choose this option, we'll pick you up directly from your hotel in Varadero at the scheduled time, instead of meeting at the Cárdenas meeting point. At the end of the tour, we'll return you to your accommodation.
