Day of the Dead Cenote Ceremony
Description
At the time indicated, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Cancún and head to the San Bernardino de Siena convent, in the city of Valladolid. Ready to learn all about the Day of the Dead traditions?
Before going to the cenote where we'll attend a very special ceremony, we'll enter this historic convent from the 16th century. Did you know that it's one of the oldest colonial complexes in Yucatán? We'll tell you what this place was like during the Maya times and how it changed with the arrival of the Spanish.
After this first visit, we'll return to the bus and journey to a Maya town where we'll see the Day of the Dead coming to life in an idyllic cenote. This celebration, a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, came about from a combination of indigenous traditions and catholic beliefs. We'll learn all about it!
Firstly, you'll learn about ancient Maya body paintings, a very special technique focused on honouring the dead. Then, we'll try tequila, a typical liquor that you'll love!
Gradually, night will fall in the holy cenote. The portals between the living and the dead merge as the guide reveals many interesting facts about the Day of the Dead ceremony. We'll participate in an offering to honour the dead and learn about the importance of these ceremonies on this important date, creating a truly moving spiritual bond.
To top it all off, we'll enjoy a delicious buffet of tacos and other traditional Maya delicacies, the perfect finishing touch to this tour!
After a total of 10 to 11 hours, we'll end this fantastic experience back at your hotel.
