Kuntur Wasi Day Trip
Kuntur Wasi Day Trip
We'll pick you at the indicated time at your hotel in Cajamarca to start this excursion to Kuntur Wasi, an archaeological complex located on the La Copa hill, in the province of San Pablo. We'll arrive there at around 10:45 am.
Did you know that Kuntur Wasi is a Quechua term meaning "house of the condor"? It was given this name because of some stone sculptures that were found on the site, depicting this animal. Other statues of supernatural beings were also found.
Kuntur Wasi was a necropolis belonging to the Chavín civilisation and the site was excavated in 1989 by Japanese archaeologists led by Dr. Yoshio Onuki. In its eight tombs, valuable objects such as crowns, masks and forged jewellery were found. Did you know that the gold found here is the oldest in the Americas?
We'll visit the Museum of Kuntur Wasi, where we'll e gold objects discovered in the excavations. Among them is the famous 14-sided crown, a magnificent piece of goldsmith's work made using the embossing technique, i.e. with decorated gold plates.
Our tour will continue with a visit to the archaeological complex, where we'll be able to admire the temple, the tombs and the carved stone sculptures. After the visit to Kuntur Wasi, we'll go to a local restaurant nearby, in San Pablo where we'll stop for lunch before returning to Cajamarca.
We will arrive at your hotels about 8 hours later.
