Full Tour Description
At the scheduled time, we'll collect you from your hotel in Cairo or Giza, and from there, we'll make our way towards the GEM (Grand Egyptian Museum).
Once we've arrived at this huge building, whose architecture is inspired by the Pharaoh's civilisation, we'll take a 2-hour tour around the spaces of the museum which, pending the official opening of the permanent exhibition, are already open to the public
We'll begin this guided tour of the Grand Egyptian Museum of Cairo by firstly checking out the hanging obelisk above a 4-legged platform. It's an imposing column dedicated to Ramesses II which is found on the outside of the building, in front of the entrance to the museum.
After admiring this pilar, we'll enter the building through the Grand Hall. Here, we'll see a 12-metre (39 ft.) tall statue of the Pharaoh Ramesses II. We'll also see 10 statues of Senusret I, the King Merenpetah column and various Ptolemaic statues.
Within this impressive reception room, whose glass ceiling allows rays of sun to enter, is the famous Grand Staircase. At this Grand Staircase gallery, which will allow us access to the rooms of the permanent exhibition, we'll see a famous collection of sculptures.
As we tour this monumental set of stairs, we'll take in several sculptures of gods and Egyptian pharaohs, such as a collection of stone columns and sarcophaguses. As we'll see, all of these pieces are related in one way or another to the journey to eternity.
Then, we'll see a glass space from which we'll be able to take a look at the Pyramids of Giza. Finally, we'll bring this tour to an end at the museum's gift shop. Here, you'll be able to purchase souvenirs such as cookbooks that contain traditional Egyptian recipes, as well as local handicrafts.
Once we've finished the tour, we'll make our return journey back to the hotels, where we'll say our goodbyes after between 3 and 4 hours together.
Schedules
This tour will take place in the morning time. A day before the activity, you'll receive confirmation of the exact pickup time depending on the location of your hotel.
About The Grand Egyptian Museum
Curious about what all the hype is about? Below, you'll find some fascinating information about this breathtaking museum and the exhibitions found within.
Where is it?
Located on the outskirts of Cairo, just 10 minutes from the Pyramids of Giza and barely half an hour from the Sphinx Airport, the lavish Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is the biggest in the world dedicated to the civilisation of Ancient Egypt.
History
The project of building this gigantic exhibition began in 1990, but it wasn't until the early 2000s that work began. Currently, pending the grand opening, the exhibition rooms are still not open to the public.
However, after many years of waiting in anticipation, since the end of 2023, it's now possible to visit the different spaces within the museum.
Once it's fully opened...
Once all works have been completed and the museum is finally opened fully, you'll be able to visit the following sights:
- More than 5,000 pieces from Ancient Egypt, 2,000 of which will be on display for the very first time.
- 2 galleries dedicated entirely to the collection from the tomb of Tutankamon.
- A room for seasonal exhibitions.
- A children's museum.
- Other facilities: a conference centre, a library, an auditorium, a cinema and various other spaces for educational workshops.
