Retiro Free Walking Tour

At the indicated time, we'll meet up at the foot of the imposing Monument of General San Martín, in the historic square of the same name. This iconic plaza, a National Historic Site since 1942, is steeped in Argentine history and surrounded by some of the country's most important landmarks.

As we gather around the monument, we’ll delve into its sculptures, uncovering the meanings behind this tribute to one of the key figures in Argentina’s fight for independence. Nearby, we’ll encounter the Monument to the Malvinas War, which solemnly commemorates Argentina's most recent conflict.

From here, we'll admire the palaces that encircle the square: San Martín Palace, Paz Palace, and Palacio Haedo, all of which are magnificent examples of the opulent architecture that characterises the area. Along the way, you'll hear about how the yellow fever epidemic in the late 19th century spurred the wealthy to move to this northern district, shaping it into the elegant neighbourhood we see today.

Our next stop will be the bustling Calle Florida, a historic pedestrian street known for its lively atmosphere and high-end shopping. Here, we'll visit the famed Galerías Pacífico shopping centre, a masterpiece of Parisian Beaux-Arts design. Inside, you'll have 15 minutes of free time to wander through its luxurious shops and admire the breathtaking interior, adorned with murals and intricate architectural details.

We’ll continue our tour with a visit to the Kavanagh Building, one of the tallest and most iconic residential towers in Buenos Aires. Nearby, we'll also see the Torre Monumental clock tower, also known as the Tower of the English, built by British residents to celebrate the centenary of the May Revolution.

After a total of 2 hours, the tour will come to a close outside the Torre Monumental clock tower.
