Explore the San Telmo Antiques Fair and the Mataderos Market, two perfect spots to discover the most deep-rooted culture of Buenos Aires.
Description
When you make your booking, you'll be able to choose out of the following 2 options:
San Telmo & Mataderos Markets Tour (6 hours 30 mins)
With this option, we'll meet at 10:30 am, at number 831 on Calle Defensa and we'll make our way to the San Pedro Telmo Antiques Fair. This market is held every Sunday in the Plaza Dorrego square and on Defensa; 200 stalls are set up and you can find all sorts of treasures, including furniture, antiques and clothes.
The atmosphere is one of this market's main attractions, as while you explore the stalls, you'll hear the soundtrack of a live tango orchestra playing traditional songs, and of course, you'll see couples dancing. This is a perfect example of authentic Buenos Aires culture!
Afterwards, we'll enter the San Telmo Market, a century-old building with all kinds of stalls for all tastes. After learning about this interesting place's history, we'll head to the southeast of Buenos Aires to explore the Mataderos Market, known in Spanish as the Feria de Mataderos. This was created over 30 years ago and is a true reflection of the Gaucho cowboy culture. We'll try the roast meats and other typical dishes that the Gaucho chefs whip up on their grills. Delicious!
After spending three hours exploring the market stalls and enjoying their lively atmospheres, we'll return to the initial meeting point and the tour will come to an end at around 5 pm.
Mataderos Market Tour (4 hours)
If you choose this option, the tour will start at 12:30 pm in the heart of San Telmo, and we'll head directly to the Mataderos Market. Known as the Feria de Mataderos, at this market, you'll get the chance to try some delicious typical dishes such as tamales, humita en chala, locro and the famous empanadas.
Next, we'll explore the market stalls, discovering the crafts, instruments, accessories and clothes on sale here – there are more than 300 stalls! Plus, if you'd like, we'll visit the Criollo de los Corrales Museum, a rural-style museum about the way of life of the gauchos in the pampas.
Hungry? We'll stop at one of the many food stalls in the market to have some delicious empanadas for lunch and a drink. Then, we'll continue visiting the handicraft stands of the Feria de Mataderos.
Finally, we'll play a game of pool on one of the country's oldest pool tables, and we'll see the folkloric shows that are put on daily on the main stage. We'll finish the tour by returning to the initial meeting point after a total of 4 hours.
Itinerary Changes
In case of rain, the Mataderos Fair tour will be cancelled. In its place, the San Telmo Fair tour will be extended to include the San Pedro Telmo Church, the El Viejo Hotel Gallery on Balcarce Street, the Casa Mínima, the Santo Domingo Convent and the Manzana de las Luces.
