What to Expect

Do you know the story of Mama Antula, Argentina's first saint? Join us for an enriching walking tour through Buenos Aires as we uncover her legacy. Meet at Lorea Square, from where we'll kick things off.

First up, we'll head to Our Lady of Mercy Basilica. Here lies the remains of Maria Antonia de Paz y Figueroa, better known as Mama Antula. On February 11, 2024, this prominent figure of the 18th century was canonized by Pope Francis, who made her the first woman born in Argentina to be declared a saint.

Throughout our tour, we'll get to know her origins and legacy as we see the beautiful Argentine capital. We'll pass by the Church of the Arcangel Micheal, for example, as we visit Mayo Plaza, where we'll find the famous Casa Rosada alongside the Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires. Within this cathedral, we'll see a portrait of Mama Antula. While in the image she may be wearing her habit, Mama Antula was no nun but rather a consecrated layperson who went on to create the Daughters of the Divine Savior.

Also in Mayo Plaza, we'll take in the exterior of the Buenos Aires Cabildo. Next up, our route will take us to the Otto Wulff building. These two monuments both share a link with Mama Antula that we'll discover along the way.

Lastly, we'll come to Our Lady of Montserrat Parrish after a 2.5-hour tour where we'll end our route in front of the Museum of the Holy House of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Fun fact: this building was constructed thanks to an initiative by Mama Antula!
