The Széchenyi Chain Bridge is a symbol of the unified Buda and Pest, the western and eastern halves that comprise the Hungarian capital city of Budapest. A must-visit on your trip!

History

The Chain Bridge, designed by British engineer William Tierney Clark, was built in the mid-19th century. It was the first permanent stone bridge connecting Buda and Pest over the Danube River.

How to see the Chain Bridge

The best places to see (and photograph) the Chain Bridge are at Budapest Castle, on the banks of the Danube, and from the river itself, aboard a boat. The view is even more magical at sunset, as the city lights start to come on.

Did you know...

In 1853 four huge lion statues were placed guarding both ends of the bridge. Legend has it that these sculptures are the guardians of Hungary and will come to life if the country is threatened.
