Free Tour of Imperial Budapest
Description
Meet us in front of the Ministry of Agriculture in Budapest, right in front of the Parliament building, to kick off our free tour into the history of how Hungary became a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the reasons behind its relatively brief existence.
Our first stop is at the Trianon Monument, where we'll share with you the story of how Hungary's participation in the First World War led to its loss and the subsequent construction of this monument, surrounded by controversy. Continuing, we'll visit the "Eternal Flame of Battyany," where you'll gain insights into the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. Additionally, you'll discover the intriguing reason behind the cultural taboo of toasting with beer.
Next, we'll pass the Post Office, a remarkable Art Nouveau building often likened to the work of the "Hungarian Gaudi." Following this, we'll continue to explore St. Stephen's Church, adorned with exquisite marble, intricate paintings, and the mesmerizing beauty of jasper.
From there we'll pass along Andrassy Avenue, known for its extravagant shops and architecture. At the Hungarian National Opera House, we'll delve into the fascinating world of Empress Sissi, a significant figure of the imperial era of the 19th century.
All aboard as we hop on the iconic Metro Line 1, which traces its origins back to 1896, making it the second oldest metro system in Europe after Istanbul's Tünel. This charming journey takes us to our next destination: Heroes' Square.
Our stroll continues as we meander around the Széchenyi Thermal Baths leading us into Varosliget Park, where we can enjoy the lush greenery. We'll cross the lake to arrive at the Vajdahunyad Castle, our final stop. Here, we'll bring our free tour to a close after 2.5 hours of captivating sightseeing, ending our time with tales of Count Dracula.
