Why Visit the Bassins des Lumiéres?
Make your way to Les Bassins des Lumières to enter this unique, interactive art gallery located in Bordeaux's former submarine base. Opened in the summer of 1999, Les Bassins des Lumières is home to huge immersive digital exhibitions dedicated to the great artists of art history, contemporary creations and major current themes including the conquest of space of comic strips. Les Bassins is also the largest digital art centre in the world. What more could you ask for?
Within Les Bassins itself, you'll find 4 massive basins, with a continuous cycle of digital and immersive exhibitions:
- The Immersive Citerne: a 155 metre-squared (1,668 square feet) space with 7-metre (23-foot) high ceilings, that allows you to lie down or sit down and get a different perspective.
- The Cube: a 220 metre-squared (2,368 square feet), 8-metre (26-foot) high space dedicated to contemporary artists working in the field of immersive art, there's also a parallel exhibition of works by established and emerging digital artists.
- Large Mooring Buoys: various images from temporary exhibitions are projected onto the water.
- The Base Museum: explore the history of the old submarine base and discover its fascinating past.
While you can spend as much or as little time at Les Bassins as you'd like, it usually takes around an hour to take in the exhibitions.
