Follow in the footsteps of the legend of El Dorado with this excursion to Guatavita, a beautiful municipality home to a lagoon with a captivating history.
Guatavita Excursion + Casa al Revés
After departing from Bogotá, we'll make a stop in the town of La Calera in the department of Cundinamarca. Here you'll have 45 minutes of free time to have breakfast on your own, enjoying typical foods like such as aguapanela (an infusion made from sugar cane), chocolate, cheese, and almojábana (a cheese bread).
Continuing on our way after breakfast, we'll admire the landscapes of the Andes and its cloud forests, as well as fields full of crops like blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries. We'll also see the dams of San Rafael and Sisga, which supply water to the city of Bogotá.
The first place we'll visit is the emblematic Casa al Revés, an icon of Guatavita. This curious house is located in the Vereda Santa María and its name says it all: it's built upside down! After a 30-minute wait, we'll enter the house and check out all its rooms, which are inverted in the same way as the building. You'll be able to take loads of fun photos!
Following the visit to this whimsical house, we'll visit the town of Guatavita, where we'll learn about the sacred rites of the Muisca, an Indigenous People known for using various gold objects in their ceremonies. This fact gave rise to the famous legend of El Dorado, whose fame attracted numerous conquistadors in search of these precious treasures.
The legend of El Dorado has inspired movies, books, TV series, and even video games, but... What's actually true? Is it true that pre-Columbian civilizations possessed a large number of gold pieces? What exactly did the Spanish conquistadors expect to find? We'll answer all these questions during the tour!
We then take a break for lunch (not included), after which we'll return to the Colombian capital and stop at the viewpoint of La Calera to take in beautiful panoramic views of Bogotá. Here you'll taste canelazo, a drink made with aguapanela, orange juice, and aguardiente (a type of distilled spirit). Then, after an eight-hour excursion, we'll drop you off at the same stops in Bogotá where we started the tour.
