Discover the stunning Maltese city of Birgu on this free walking tour. We'll visit the city's most iconic locations such as the Main Square, the Bishop's Palace and the War Museum.

Description

On the day of the activity, we'll meet at the Advanced Gate in Birgu at the scheduled time. From there, we'll begin this exciting and informative tour of the Pearl of the Three Cities. Ready? Let's go!

During this tour, we'll explore quaint squares and hidden gems, forging a connection with Birgu's authentic charm, in an enriching journey through both time and culture. The expert local guide will uncover the layers of the city's history and Baroque architecture.

At our first stops of the tour, the Advanced Gate and the Gate of Provence, two doors in the ancient city walls, we'll learn how Birgu was the heart of the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, a pivotal event in the island's history. The Ottoman forces relentlessly attacked the city, seeking to expand their empire in the Mediterranean. However, the famous Knights of St. John, helped by local defenders, valiantly repelled the would-be invaders. Well-known fortifications such as Fort St. Angelo played crucial roles.

We'll also see the Bastions of St. John and St. James and the Armoury of the Knights of St. John, where you'll find out about Malta during the Second World War when Birgu bore witness to intense air raids and naval attacks. As a strategic Mediterranean outpost, it faced relentless bombing by the Axis forces. The city's proximity to the Grand Harbour made it a key target for Axis bombers aiming to disrupt the Allied supply lines. Despite the constant struggle the city has faced, its resilient character and citizens have always shone through.

During the tour, we'll also see magnificent architectural marvels such as the Bishop's Palace, the Huesca Palace, and the Inquisitor's Palace, among other historically relevant sites such as the Freedom Monument and the Victorious City Marina.

Finally, after 1 hour and 45 minutes, we'll say our goodbyes and bring this tour to an end.
