Tour of the Besalú Jewish Quarter
Tour of the Jewish Quarter of Besalú
At the time of your choice, we'll meet up in front of the iconic Romanesque bridge that crosses the river Fluvià and set off on our tour of Besalú.
On the other bank awaits the medieval historic center of one of the most beautiful villages of Girona. We'll visit the most emblematic spots in the town, among which the Call, the old Jewish quarter, stands out. It's an area full of narrow and picturesque streets that will bring us several centuries back in time.
In 1492, the Catholic Monarchs decided to expel the Jewish population from the kingdoms. Even so, it's still possible to learn about their legacy after all these years. To do so, we'll visit one of the four remaining miqves in Europe. In this ancient building, which housed the Jewish bath hall, we'll learn about the ritual purification process.
During the tour of the Call, we'll learn about the customs, traditions, culture, and cuisine in the Besalú Jewish community. We'll also discover the history of other important monuments in the town, such as the monastery of San Pedro: a magnificent monastery that was established in the 11th century thanks to Count Bernardo I of Besalú.
Finally, after two hours of strolling around Besalú, our tour will come to an end in the historic center of the town.
