Berlin Icebar Ticket
Berlin Icebar: The Coolest Bar in Germany
Welcome to the Berlin Icebar: Polar Expedition! Brave the cold inside an igloo made up of 40,000 kilos of ice. Upon arrival, enjoy a cocktail in the tavern—no icy chill here yet. After dressing up in thermal clothes, step into the ice room at -10°C (14°F).
During this interactive experience, you’ll become the Hansa crew, shipwrecked in Greenland in 1869. Captain Hegemann narrates the perilous journey on melting ice as you savor two more complimentary drinks. Whether you leave or stay in the warm room, it's an unforgettable Arctic experience in the heart of Berlin.
The Story Behind the Expedition
Immerse yourself in the story of a German expedition in 1868 involving two ships. This is their story:
En route to Greenland, a signal misunderstanding in dense polar fog separated the two ships—Germania and Hansa. The Germania successfully explored the North Pole region, adhering to the expedition's goal, while the Hansa embarked on an unexpected detour.
On September 14, the Hansa became trapped between massive chunks of ice and it slowly succumbed to the ice's pressure. Fearing a sinking ship, the captain ordered the provisions and dinghies be moved onto the surface of the ice sheets. Using coal dust briquettes, they constructed a shelter, enduring a harsh winter amid polar bears' threats. After the ship sank on October 22, the ice floe drifted south along Greenland's east coast.
As they journeyed south, the ice floe melted in warmer weather. Forced to abandon the shrinking ice floe, the crew utilized the saved dinghies. After 36 challenging days, on June 13, 1870, the crew reached the Herrnhut mission in Narsarmijit, Greenland's southernmost settlement. Returning to Germany took an additional two months, concluding with a hero's welcome for the resilient crew of the Hansa.
