Bergen Private Tour
Description
We'll meet in Torgallmenningen, Bergen's main square, at the scheduled time for this captivating city tour. Let's get this show on the road!
Founded in 1070 by King Olaf III Haraldsson, the city of Bergen, or Bjørgvin, "the green meadow among the mountains" was the capital of Norway in the 12th and 13th centuries. Considered an important trade route for hundreds of years, Bergen mainly exported fish and fur and is currently the second-largest city in Norway, despite a number of historic fires that tore through the city, most notably in 1706 and 1916.
With a bustling modern economy based almost exclusively on fishing and shipbuilding, Bergen also boasts incredibly well-preserved medieval architecture, such as the 12th-century Bergen Cathedral.
Take in the sights as we roam the streets of Bergen and visit a number of culturally significant landmarks, such as The Bergen Public Library, The Bergen Railway Station and Bryggen, a historic harbour that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. We'll also take a look at The Bryggen Hanseatic Museum. Did you know that in 1350, an office was established in Bergen by the Hanseatic League, a medieval confederation of merchant guilds?
During the tour, you'll learn a few interesting facts about The Battle of Stamford Bridge as well as The Battle of Vågen and The Norwegian Resistance Movement. You'll also learn a thing or two about Olaf Nordhagen, a celebrated Norwegian architect, artist, and engineer.
