Palms Desert Natural Park Trek
We'll meet up at the scheduled time at the Interpretation Center of Desierto de Las Palmas, where we begin our fantastic trek through the Natural Park. Get ready to encounter one of the most beautiful views of Benicassim!
First off, we'll learn all about the flora of the park at the Desierto de Las Palmas Information Center. Through explanatory models, we'll come to understand all the particularities of the nature of the area, as well as its fauna.
From here, we'll go to the viewpoint of the hermitage of Carmen, from where you'll enjoy an exceptional panoramic view of the area. On clear days you may even see the silhouette of the Columbretes, a group of small volcanic islands located off the coast of Castellón.
We'll begin the ascent bordering the Porteria Vella, from where you'll admire the reddish constructions that the monks erected. You'll learn why they named this area the Desert of the Palms. Because of its vegetation, you'll see that this place is full of palmitos, the only species of palm tree endemic to Europe. You'll also see how this landscape is anything but desert. The Carmelitas order named these spaces when it was chosen as a spiritual retreat.
We'll continue by climbing up to the famous Bartolo, which at over 2300 feet, is the highest point in the park. Once there, we'll come across the hermitage of San Miguel and, of course, enjoy delightful views of the bay of Benicassim and its surroundings.
Finally, we'll start the descent back to the original starting point where our brilliant hike through the Palms Desert concludes after five hours.
