Tour Details

At the scheduled time, we'll meet in Piazza Cardinale Bartolomeo to kick off a tour through the most mysterious corners of Benevento—a city full of magic, legends, and centuries of history.

Our journey begins in Rione Triggio, the oldest part of the city. This maze of narrow streets is the stage for age-old tales that still linger today. We'll uncover the story of the Mazzamauriello, a mischievous goblin from Campanian folklore said to live in the nooks of homes—playing pranks or lending a hand, depending on how he’s treated.

Just a few steps away, we'll dive into the eerie legend of La Zoccolara, a ghostly woman some say they’ve heard wandering the streets in wooden clogs. From there, we’ll continue to the Roman Theater, a place that once echoed with performances, rituals, and celebrations—sounds that, according to legend, still linger in the air.

Next, we’ll pause at the Cathedral of Benevento, an 8th-century structure rebuilt time and again due to battles and destruction. What secrets lie behind its ancient walls? Our path then takes us to the Palace of Paul V, now home to the Janua Museum, where things get even more mysterious.

Inside, we’ll delve into the world of the janare, the legendary witches of Benevento. Stories tell of their midnight gatherings under a magical walnut tree by the River Sabato. The museum displays everyday items said to have belonged to these women—alongside ancient remedies, spells, and potion recipes.

We'll continue along Corso Garibaldi until we reach the Arch of Trajan, built between 114 and 117 AD. Dedicated to the famed Roman emperor, the arch features intricate carvings of heroic deeds and imperial glory. Some say that when the wind picks up, you can hear whispers echoing through its stone reliefs. Keep your ears open!

Afterward, you’ll have some free time to sample local specialties. Don’t miss the torroni (nougat) and liquore strega—a sweet, spicy drink said to ward off evil spells. After all these tales, you might just need it!

We’ll wrap up this five-hour adventure back where we started. Until next time!
