Beijing Hutongs Guided Tour
Beijing's Hutongs
The guided tour will begin at the appointed time at the historic Nanluoguxiang Hutong, an 800-meter-long (2,624-foot) alley dating back to the Yuan Dynasty. Here, the first hutongs and courtyard houses began to take shape.
As we walk along this alley, we'll enjoy the mix of old and modern Beijing, with its trendy bars, delicious restaurants, unique hostels, themed stores, and street vendors. We'll also see the typical gray houses, accompanied by century-old trees, a living testimony of Beijing's traditional architecture.
Next, we'll head to Mao'er Hutong, once known as Zitong Temple, where Emperor Wenchang was worshipped. On this hutong, we'll pass Ke Yuan, one of Beijing's most iconic gardens and the mansion of the last Empress Wanrong.
Passing over the Yinding Bridge, also known as the Silver Ingot Bridge, we'll reach a narrow canal linking Qianhai Lake and Houhai Lake. This is the center of the Shichahai area, surrounded by quiet hutongs. From here, we can enjoy the view of the western mountain, one of the eight ancient wonders of Beijing.
Our last destination will be Qianhai Lake and Houhai Bar Street. This area used to be part of the ancient Grand Canal of the Yuan Dynasty 600 years ago. Today, it's surrounded by ancient palaces of ministers, temples, and residences of celebrities of the past.
Then, we'll bring this 2-hour hutong tour to a close, at Houhai Lake.
