On this guided tour of Bayonne, we'll explore the historical centre on foot in this beautiful city in the French Basque Country, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
Tour Details
We'll meet at the time you select in front of the Bayonne Tourist Office, from where we'll begin our walking tour of the city centre.
The visit will begin by heading over to the Memorial to the Dead, built in homage to those who lost their lives in World War I. Very close to this commemorative monument, we'll find the Château Vieux, a fortress with Roman origins that has witnessed many historical events.
After getting to know some of these events, we'll continue onto the Bayonne Cathedral. We'll admire the Gothic architecture on its magnificent facade before heading over to Rue Port Neuf, also known as "Chocolate Street". Here, we'll talk about the Sephardic Jewish people who brought cacao to Bayonne in the 18th century.
Afterwards, we'll see the Bayonne Town Hall, a very beautiful neoclassical building, and the Church of Saint André, a neogothic architectural gem. A few steps away stands the Saint-Esprit Bridge, where we'll get to enjoy lovely views of the Adour River.
Once we've enjoyed these scenic views, we'll head over to the Château-Neuf, where we'll see the outside of this medieval castle, which is now a university.
Lastly, after walking for about 1.5 hours, this tour will come to an end at Les Halles Market, where you can continue your exploration of Bayonne by trying some of the local cuisine, such as Gâteau Basque.
