Gabriel García Márquez Tour
Itinerary
At the scheduled time, you'll be collected from your hotel in Barranquilla and be brought by minibus to the city centre to follow in the footsteps of the famous writer Gabriel García Márquez. During the tour, we'll unveil the novelist's life in this city that he called home from the age of 8, and we'll also visit some of his most frequented spots from the 1950s.
The first stop will be at the old headquarters of the El Heraldo newspaper, where he began on his path into the world of journalism working as a columnist and reporter. Walking on the Paseo Bolívar we'll eventually reach the New York Skyscrapers. Do you know what link this place shares with the Nobel Prize? You'll find out!
In order to delve into the personal life of the author, we'll visit Perpetuo Socorro church, where he married his first love Mercedes in 1958. As we recount the love story of the couple, we'll make our way towards the River Quartermaster's Office, to see the famous Yellow Butterflies monument, erected in honour of the writer.
Heading through the Caribbean Cultural Park we'll stumble across the statue of Gabo in honour of the years the novelist spent in Barranquilla. After this, we'll continue towards the El Prado neighbourhood, to see where Gabriel brought Mercedes on their first date.
Only a few meters from here lies the old Museum of Fine Arts. Through García Márquez's frequent visits to the museum, he got to know Pedro Biava, an Italian who would serve as inspiration for the personality of Pietro Crespi in the author's culminating work Cien Años de Soledad (100 Years of Solitude).
The last stop on this tour will be at La Cueva, a cultural bar where Gabo used to go with his intellectual friends to debate about various topics. In this symbolic location, we'll enjoy a refreshing local drink before returning to the hotels, after 4 hours.
