Prepare to be amazed by the breathtaking landscapes and rich biodiversity along our hiking route through the Chicamocha Canyon. Over the course of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), you'll have the chance to witness a genuine natural marvel up close.
Description
We'll meet up at the designated time at Barichara's main park and hop on a minibus bound for the village of Villanueva. The scenic road trip will last about two hours.
Upon arrival at Villanueva, we'll disembark and head towards Alto de Martha, the starting point for an exhilarating hiking adventure through the Chicamocha Canyon.
Our hike spans 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) and passes through places like Macaregua, Mesa de los Santos, and towns like Aratoca. Along the way, we'll reach the Rancho Alegre viewpoint, providing a stunning panoramic view of the Chicamocha Canyon—a perfect photo op!
At this scenic point, we'll take a short break and discuss how this landscape has evolved over centuries. Fun fact: Did you know this place was nominated for the Natural Wonders of the World list?
As we continue our trek, we'll immerse ourselves in the lush vegetation of the Chicamocha Canyon, observe its river, and keep an eye out for the birds and monkeys that call this National Park home. We'll also encounter some cobblestone stretches designed by the German engineer Geo von Lengerke during the colonial era.
Given the demanding nature of the 5-hour trek, we'll pause for a picnic, which includes a sandwich, a piece of fruit, and water.
With renewed energy, we'll embark on the final leg of our hike toward the town of Jordan. There, our minibus will be waiting for us. After a total of 9 hours, we'll conclude the activity back at our starting point in Barichara.
