Visiting the Ancient Synagogue of Barcelona is to immerse yourself in one of the most fascinating chapters of the history of Barcelona. Unmissable!

Visit One of the Oldest Synagogues in Europe

Located in the heart of the Call, the old Jewish quarter of the Catalan capital, the Ancient Synagogue of Barcelona is considered one of the oldest synagogues in Europe. This emblematic building, whose foundations date back to Roman times, was recently discovered and restored to be reopened as a museum.

With this ticket, you'll find that the Major Synagogue is much more than a building, it's a living testament to the rich Jewish history of Barcelona. During your visit, you can explore not only the medieval architecture that has survived the passage of time, but also learn about this culture through a small museum annex that complements the experience.

What stories are hidden behind the sturdy walls of this sacred place? How did the Jewish community live in Barcelona until 1391, when it ceased to be used as a synagogue? All these unknowns have been revealed thanks to research begun in 1987 by medieval historian Jaume Riera i Sans. He was the one who determined the exact location of the Major Synagogue, thus rediscovering a lost chapter of the history of Barcelona.

What to Expect

  • Outside the temple: You'll find a building with superimposed early medieval constructions, a central structure of the 13th century and modifications of the 17th century, when the upper floors were built. You'll enter the temple from Marlet Street through a small door.
  • First room: Welcome to the synagogue hallway! After flanking the door and descending a few steps, you'll reach this first room. Just below this staircase, you can see the remains of the Opus africanum, a construction technique of ancient Rome on which the medieval walls of the 13th century rested. You can also see a section of wall from this same ancient period.
  • Second room: After passing through the opening in the wall and stepping down, you’ll find yourself in the heart of the medieval synagogue. This sacred space holds a fascinating history. Did you know that seat ownership was permitted here, with the location of one’s seat reflecting their social status? On the southeast wall, you’ll notice two large windows, between which stands a replica of the Ark, or Aaron Hakodesh, where Torah manuscripts were once carefully stored. Toward the back of the room, you’ll see a striking Menorah, crafted in 1957 and generously donated by artist Ferrán Aguiló in honor of his ancestors.
