Description

At the indicated time, we'll meet in front of the Bar Harbor Historical Society located in the La Rochelle Mansion. Ready to begin this guided tour of the town?

At our first stop, we'll enter the impressive mansion, one of the few brick houses on the island and an example of the area's Gilded Age architecture. As we enter, we'll admire its 20 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, and elegant parlors, while we tell you what life was like for the high society that summered in Bar Harbor. Afterwards, we'll head out onto the street and into the town's historic center.

Once we get to the heart of Bar Harbor, we'll walk along West Street, the town's commercial thoroughfare and liveliest area. Along this street, we'll show you the most iconic buildings and tell you some of the most curious anecdotes about the town.

Did you know that Rockefeller chose this place to build more than 80 kilometers (49 miles) of carriage paths, that the great fire of 1947 destroyed half the city, and that it was rebuilt with the efforts of its inhabitants? Or that rum trafficking was a very lucrative activity during the Prohibition era?

After 2.5 hours of traveling back in time, we'll end our guided tour of Bar Harbor by saying goodbye at the starting point.
