Whale Watching in Bahía Solano
Whale Watching in Bahía Solano
When you make your reservation, you can choose one of the following options. In both options, we'll meet at Carrera 2 in Bahía Solano, in the tourist area of Ciudad Mutis, at the indicated time.
5-hour tour
After attending a brief introductory talk about humpback whales at the meeting point, we'll walk to the beach of Ciudad Mutis to embark. In case of low tide, we'll travel by tuk-tuk or minibus to the dock of Bahía Solano.
During the journey through the waters of the Colombian Pacific, we'll learn a lot of interesting facts about these enormous cetaceans. If conditions are favorable, we'll also use a hydrophone to listen to the sounds of the whales underwater. Plus we'll try to spot other animals, such as dolphins, turtles, sailfish, sharks, or seabirds!
While sailing, we'll also have a snack on board that'll consist of lemonade or iced tea and a cheese bread or croissant.
Finally, after 3-4 hours of whale watching, we'll sail back to the starting point. The total duration of the activity, which will depend on the tides, will be between 4 and 5 hours.
8-hour tour
If you opt for this option, after completing the 5-hour tour itinerary, we'll continue the trip to Playa Mecana. If the tide is high, we'll sail to the mouth of the Mecana River. Here, we'll enjoy an ecosystem with a lush mangrove forest that serves as a habitat for numerous birds and plants. In case of low tide, we'll disembark on the beach and, from there, we'll walk to the Mecana River.
The tour will then continue at the home of two natives of the Mecana community, where we'll have a typical lunch. The menu will include freshly caught fish, patacones or yucca, rice, salad, and soup.
Following lunch, we'll rest for a little bit on the riverbank. Then, we'll go tubing on the Mecana River!
Finally, after finishing tubing, we'll sail back to the starting point. As in the previous option, the total duration of the activity will depend on the tides.
Whale watching
The coast of Bahía Solano is one of the best places in the Colombian Pacific to see humpback whales, dolphins, and other cetaceans. However, animals are unpredictable. The sighting of a greater or lesser number of cetaceans will depend on various factors such as the weather at the time or the breeding and calving seasons of the different species.
Marine research tour
If you want to be a scientist for a day, you can opt for this marine research tour. You'll help marine biologists take samples of the cetaceans of Bahía Solano!
