Piquimachay Cave + Ayacucho Grotto Excursion
Destination
Meeting at Plaza de Armas de Ayacucho, we'll start this full-day tour by visiting some of the most visited places of the Huanta province.
First stop: Piquimachay cave, a cavern that's over 20,000 years old. Did you know, that in Quechua, Piquimachay means flea? To reach the cave, we'll take a short walk, about 30 minutes, and once there we'll explore the cave and the grotto inside that was discovered by Richard MacNeish, an archeologist from the United States.
Inside the cave, we'll traverse its different levels. The deepest, called Paracaisa, can be dated back to the Lithic period, while the other levels are from the Pleistocene and Archaic periods respectively.
After learning all the cave's secrets, we'll head back to the town of Huanta, also known as the Emerald of the Andes. Can you guess why? You'll find out on the tour!
The tour covers sites such as Plaza Mayor, Matriz Church, and the venerated figure of Obispo de Piedra. We'll finish this guided tour of Huanta the best way there is: with a tasting of liqueurs made from fruit special to the region like coca, lúcuma, muña, and algarrobina.
To end this beautiful day, we'll make our last and final stop at the Aqocacha waterfall before arriving at your pickup location to take you back to your respective hotel.
