Hiking and Kayaking at the Emerald Lagoon
Hiking and Kayaking at the Emerald Lagoon
Leaving the main square of Ayacucho, where we'll meet at 6 am, we'll travel through the plains of the Andean highlands towards Huanta. Here we'll make a pit stop to rest and have breakfast.
At around 11 am, we'll arrive at the starting point for our half-hour trekking route through the pastures until we reach the famous Verdecocha or Emerald Lagoon. This out-of-this-world lake is located at an altitude of 4300 meters (14,100 feet), and as soon as we'll arrive you'll see that the hike was well worth it.
Once we become immersed in this beautiful natural enclave, we'll board the kayaks and begin paddling across this water reserve which has a shockingly unique crystalline emerald green color. Do you want to know what gives it this alluring characteristic? Let's find out!
After enjoying this amazing natural environment and taking plenty of pictures, we'll hit the trail again, this time making a stop at the Uchuraccay sanctuary. Here we'll take the opportunity to rest and learn a fascinating story about this place.
At the end of the trail, the bus will be waiting for us to take us to lunch in Huanta, where you'll have free time to taste the local cuisine on your own. After lunch, we'll take a brief tour of this charming town, known as the Emerald of the Andes, and visit its impressive statue of the White Christ.
Finally, we'll return to Ayacucho and drop you off back at the departure point at around 6 pm.
