Perched high up on sandstone rock formations, the Meteora Monasteries are spectacular buildings that blend with the natural landscape. Visit them on a 1 or 2 day trip from Athens!
Day Trip Details
At the indicated time, you'll head to Athens Central Station on your own and take the bus to Kalambaka Station, where you'll meet your guide.
After a 4-hour journey, we'll arrive in Kalambaka, we'll make our way to the stunning Meteora Monasteries. During the trip, the driver will reveal the history of this group of monasteries, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If you wish, you can book the option with lunch. You'll be able to choose a main course of Greek cuisine from 10 available options, accompanied by a salad, bread and mineral water. Vegetarian and vegan options are also available.
We'll have approximately 4 hours to visit the Meteora complex. In total, we'll access 3 of these monuments. The complex is made up of a total of 6 priories: the Monastery of St. Nikolaos, the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, the Monastery of St. Stephen, the Monastery of Roussanou, the Monastery of Varlaam, and the Monastery of Great Meteoron. All the cloisters are of medieval origin and are built on various sandstone mounds, which dominate the surrounding landscape. You'll love it!
Before returning to Kalambaka, we'll make a stop at the Hermit Caves, located between 2 great rock formations called Pyxari and Amparia. The perfect end to the day!
Finally, we'll say our goodbyes at the starting point after 14 hours together.
2-Day Trip to Meteora
Do you have more time to spend exploring Meteora? Then opt for a 2-day trip!
On the first day, we'll arrive at Kalabaka where we'll take you to the hotel to check in. Then, we'll begin exploring the area by visiting the Byzantine Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. This 11th-century church is found in the rocky landscape that makes Meteora unique.
At the end of the first day, we'll head up to the Hermit Caves to admire a breathtaking sunset from one of Meteora's lookout points. Then, we'll take you back to the hotel in Kalambaka where you can enjoy dinner at any of the local restaurants nearby.
On the second day, we'll enjoy a 4-hour guided tour of the Meteora monasteries. We'll enter 3 of the monasteries and stop at 6 others to admire their exteriors. Get your cameras ready!
Then, we'll head back down to Kalambaka and begin our return trip to Athens. Leaving at 6 pm from Kalabaka, we'll arrive in Athens about 4.5 hours later.
Important: Please note that on December 7, 23, 24, 25, 26, 30, and 31, 2024, and January 1, 2025, the 2-day trip does not take place.
