Tacna & Arica Day Trip

Day 1

At 10 pm, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Arequipa and take you to the bus terminal. From there, we'll hit the road to the city of Tacna. We'll arrive in Tacna at 5 am the next day.

Day 2

When we get to Tacna, you'll have some free time to get breakfast. We'll then reconvene and head to the bus terminal to catch a bus that'll take us across the border and into Chile.

After a 1-hour drive, we'll arrive in the modern city of Arica. We'll kick off our explorations of the Northern Gate of Chile with a visit to the Morro de Arica. This spot will offer us incredible panoramic views of the beaches of La Lisera and Chinchorro, as well as the monument to Christ of Peace. We'll then take a tour of the main monuments in this Chilean city. These include the train station, the colonial-style Post Office building, 21 de Mayo Street, Plaza Colón Square and St. Mark's Cathedral. Here's a fun fact for you! The tower on the cathedral was designed by the architect Gustave Eiffel.

We'll then take a break so you can have lunch at your leisure and try some of the delicious Chilean gastronomy. Once you've eaten and we've reconvened, we'll return to Peru and visit Tacna, which belonged to Chile until 1929.

Next, we'll visit the 18th-century Zela House and admire its stone façade. We'll then head to the Vigil Passage, where the Tacna Courthouse is located. This historic place is where the Act that transferred ownership of Tacna from Chile to Peru was signed.

Our tour will then take us to the Municipal Theatre, the bohemian San Martin Street, the Civic Promenade and the Parabolic Arch, which was built to honour the heroes of the War of the Pacific such as Miguel Grau and Francisco Bolognesi. We'll also see the Ornamental Pillar, which was built with bronze from Brussels. In addition, we'll visit Tacna's neo-Renaissance cathedral and the parks of the Bolognesi Alameda and the Locomotora. During our visit to the latter, we'll see original pieces of trains in the Railway Museum.

It'll then be time to go to the station so we can be taken back to Arequipa. We'll drop you off at your hotel at 5 am.
